Experian takes ID checking universal

Published: Oct 2008

Organisations with international operations will be able to corroborate identities, remain compliant and reduce costs across 24 countries following the launch of Experian's Universal ID Check. The new solution is the first multi-data source tool for identity checking at a global level.

"Organisations need to mitigate the risk of identity fraud. More organisations are dealing with customers who live outside the local country, so identity fraud risks require a global solution," says Jim Lound, product director, fraud and identity solutions at Experian.

The new tool brings together key data sets, including Sanctions and Politically Exposed Persons data, that allow for automated checking on data structures and geographical location. These include bank account validation, which is covered for 45 countries. "Users can check if the account number is appropriate to the number range and sort code used by that bank," says Lound. "If you are dealing with somebody in Paris that has a Thai bank account, you can find out confirmation of where they live and if their banking details are ok."

Other checks enabled by the system are on passport numbers, which validates that a person's date of birth correlates with numbers issued at that time, as well as geo-location of IP addresses. Experian says that response times for queries are within acceptable boundaries for both call centre and website interactions. PAF consultation period starts soon
